Summary: | Calligraphed poem [the author was Dora Sigerson Shorter], four stanzas in red and black ink, featuring a watercolour drawing by Constance Markievicz below the poem showing Kathleen Ni Houlihan bending over a dead Volunteer, somewhat similar to a pieta. When originally framed manuscript note at head "Painted by Countess Markievicz in Aylesbury Prison, 1917. Signed "Gerard Crofts". Mounted with an autograph inscription at foot: "To Gerard Crofts. Poem by Dora Sigerson Shorter. A rather late in the day wedding gift to one of Ireland's brave soldiers, from Constance de Markievicz". |
