Summary: | Enlistment poster for Oglaigh na h-Éireann [the IRA] published in 1933. In addition to statements such as 'it is the duty of young Irishmen to join the Irish Republican Army...' the poster contains an illustration depicting a scene during the Irish War of Independence in 1921 showing an Irish soldier in front of a burning Custom House with Irish tricolour in one hand and rifle in the other, whilst standing over a union jack flag. Text includes: 'Because, as history proves, it is only when Irishmen are organised, trained and disciplined, and armed as soldiers that British aggression can be successfully defeated...because the IRA is true to the teachings of Tone, Emmet, Mitchell, Lalor and Pearse...' |
