We know that Patrick O Neill and his elders were deeply immersed in historical and genealogical matters, as was almost every family and educated person in the district at that time, an interest which has been transmitted in many families down to the present day. Indeed according to the contemporary reports which have survived, Patrick's family were especially renowned for their interest in these affairs. This is reflected in the historical works in the family library. In this history of Rome, a chapter is devoted to each Emperor from Caesar to the decline of the Empire after the death of Constantine, including Anthony, Augustus, Caligula, Claudius and Nero.
