Keogh, Myles, 1840-1876. Tells of a little known aspect of the life of Keoghand his service in Saint Patrick's Battalion to Pope Pius IX. In 1860, Keogh was decorated by the pope for valor during the siege of Ancona. In another quirky coincidence that abounded in 19th century America, the Pro Petri Sede medal was found on the chest of Sitting Bull when his body was exhumed. Wrongly believing that Sitting Bull was the driving force behind the Ghost Dance, Indian agent James McLaughlin sent Indian police to arrest the chief, resulting in a skirmish that resulted in his death. It is believed that Sitting Bull had become a Catholic and wore a crucifix around his neck. Some even suggest that he was baptized by Father De Smet. Another Lakota veteran of Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee was Black Elk, recently nominated for canonization in the Catholic Church.
