Bibliographic Details

Summary:Self-adhesive label featuring an Irish Volunteer holding the Irish flag in one hand and a rifle in another, in front of the GPO [General Post Office, O'Connell Street, Dublin] which is in flames behind him. The letters "I.R.A." are printed underneath this image, at bottom of label. Designated an illegal organisation in the Republic of Ireland, the Irish Republican Army also known as the Provisional Irish Republican Army (Provisional IRA), emerged in December 1969. It was an Irish republican paramilitary organisation that sought to end British rule in Northern Ireland and bring about an independent republic encompassing all of Ireland. It saw itself as the successor to the original IRA and was so-called to mirror the 1916 Provisional Government of the Irish Republic and also (originally) to designate it as temporary (pending reorganisation of the republican movement); while this occurred in 1970, the name "Provisional" stuck with them.
