Notes: | The author's complete works in Russian. First edition. The first collected works of Wilde in Russian, 1905-9, by Sablin in Moscow, was generally condemned as a hastily-conceived project, with poor, slapdash translations, even if it proved popular with the book-buying public. This, on the other hand, the second attempt at a collected works of Wilde in Russian, edited by the young Kornei Chukovsky, was 'composed of the best translations then available. [Chukovsky] included translations by Balmont, Kuzmin, and many others from the artistic elite [and it] was published by the popular journal Niva, a byword for mass readership.' (Polonsky, p. 164).
