These papers chronicle the deteriorating relationship between Arthur French, 4th Baron De Freyne, and the tenants on his estate, as well as the attempts of organisations such as the National League and the United Irish League (UIL) to foment unrest and agitation. Notable correspondents include George Wyndham, William Ellison McCartney, William Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin, Laurence Gillooly, Bishop of Elphin, and his successor to the see, John Joseph Clancy.
