Notes:Includes correspondence, legal papers, and other material relating to the Land War (1879-1881) and to tenant disputes on the De Freyne estate between 1879 and 1906. These papers chronicle the deteriorating relationship between Arthur French, 4th Baron De Freyne, and the tenants on his estate, as well as the attempts of organisations such as the National League and the United Irish League (UIL) to foment unrest and agitation. Notable correspondents include George Wyndham, William Ellison McCartney, William Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin, Laurence Gillooly, Bishop of Elphin, and his successor to the see, John Joseph Clancy. Arthur O'Hagan and Son Solicitors and Moore, Kiely and Lloyd Solicitors are well represented throughout, as advocates for the fourth baron in various legal cases. This includes material related to the 1902 action against John Fitzgibbon and other agitators, members of the UIL Directory and 'The Freeman's Journal' (De Freyne vs Fitzgibbon et al).
