| Summary: | Image featuring a woman, wearing elaborate Elizabethan-style costume, standing under a proscenium arch, the keystone of which features the head of William Shakespeare above her; she is holding aloft a laurel wreath, in the centre of which reads: "Honour to William Poel". The masks of comedy and tragedy hang from columns either side of the stage while the woman holds a hatchment on which is written: "Shakespeare / Marlowe / Milton". Underneath this [akin to a predella], two cherubs hold a scroll with the words: "The revivifier of the Elizabethan stage" on it. Written in ink on verso "Original pen drawing by / Walter Crane" with monogram of the artist present at base of column on right hand-side of illustration. William Poel (1852-1934), an English actor, theatrical manager and dramatist is best known for his presentations of Shakespeare and his foundation in 1895 of the Elizabethan Stage Society. He played the role of the defrocked priest Peter [formerly Father] Keegan in more than one hundred performances (in 1906, 1909 and 1912) of George Bernard Shaw's play 'John Bull's Other Island' [see NPG 2762, 1932 painting of Poel by Henry Tonks in the National Portrait Gallery, London]. |
