Summary: | Three watercolours mounted on a sheet of foolscap and one dingle piece of card with the following text inscribed on it: An introduction to modern man (Homo Modernus) for post-Holocaust students / Jon Berkeley. The first watercolour is of a man seated in an interior of a house in an armchair, a pint of Guinness is in his left hand while he is depicted holding a newspaper in his right hand; he is reading this while smoking a pipe. To his left is a television, an abstract painting hangs on the wall. It is signed lower right: "Jon Berkeley 1980". Text inscribed underneath this reads: This is modern man (homo modernus) in his natural habitat. He lives in a box, which he calls a house (below). Basically his life is governed by a smaller box (above left), which is called "T.V." or simply "Box". Beneath this is a watercolour of the entrance into a two storey house, with the front door and garage are both painted bright yellow. It is signed lower right: "Jon Berkeley 1980". Pasted to the verso of this is a single sheet watercolour. At top of sheet is an image of Christ on the cross with the entrance to a church just seen in the right background. Text inscribed underneath this reads: "Contrary to popular belief, man is not a monotheist, but has a multitude of deities. One he visits every week, another has four wheels. There is a god he sits and watches, one he imbibes, one he inhales, and many more. It is signed lower right: "Jon Berkeley 1980". A second image on this sheet features an image of a red car, a glass of wine, a television set and a hand holding a smoking cigarette. It is signed lower right: "Jon Berkeley / 1980". |
