The Krazy Katalogers have entitled this "Semaphore of Haulbowline lighthouse, Irish Lights Department flag displayed, Co. Down"! That means that there are two conundrums therein. There are at least three signalling systems on display, the Semaphore Flags, the Signalling Flags and the light for Morse Code Signalling. The other conundrum, at least for Morning Mary, is Haulbowline and Co. Down being listed together? The only Haulbowline we are familiar with is down in Cork Harbour but perhaps that one has a twin up North like the recent shot of St. John's Lighthouse?

More detailed history here - www.irishlights.ie/tourism/our-lighthouses/haulbowline.aspx "...From 1824 until 1922 the Keepers and their families lived in the Cranfield Point Lighthouse dwelling. I see 4 lighthouse keepers in Cranfiled in 1901, and 4 different ones in Greencastle 1911.

Not just lights and flags. There were also bell. Ringing the bellsmeant "Mr Rogers, please take note of our distress signals", to which Mr Rogers replied by flashing a light. Newry Telegraph - Tuesday 12 January 1897: Newry Telegraph - Tuesday 12 January 1897

Following the loss of "The Connemara" and "The Retriever" in November 1916 with the loss of 94 lives, the inquiry into the disaster "expresses dissatisfaction with the communications between Haulbowline Lighthouse and the shore, and that there was no co-operation between the lighthouse, the coastguards and the lifeboat with regard to life-saving" (Irish Independent - Monday 16 April 1917)

By September 1917 the connection of the lighthouse with the shore by telephone was being considered. (Belfast News-Letter - Friday 7 September 1917) But according to a report in the Frontier Sentinel on Saturday 10 July 1937 there was still no telephone link between the lighthouse and the shore. Moral of the story: Don't throw away your flags and your morse flasher.

A disadvantage of semaphore which was highlighted in the 1917 enquiry: it doesn't work at night. Also: an inquiry which was running at the same time asked why semaphore could not be used to communicate with the lifeboat. The official being questioned doubted whether any of the lifeboatmen understood semaphore signals.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/91549360@N03] But I am like the lifeboatmen who don't understand it. And it wasn't 11pm in Australia.
