As the Irish Brigade surged forward, the Washington artillery, near the crest of the Heights, with its own Irish volunteers, awaited the charge. Owen described the scene below : "bearing aloft the green flag with the golden harp of Ireland, those brave fellows came between five -and-twenty paces of the stone-wall and encountered such a fire of shot, shell, canister, and musketry as no command was ever known to live through." Hundreds of the Brigade died in this valiant but futile attempt.
