| Summary: | GR 5474 has a contribution by Lafcadio Hearn. Some Martinique Letters of Lafcadio Hearn. With an introductory note by Elizabeth Bosland. Pages 516 to 525. From 1887 to 1889, Hearn was in the West Indies on assignment for Harper's Magazine, which resulted in Two Years in the French West Indies (1890) and his novel Youma (1890), a highly original story of a slave insurrection. Before sailing to Japan in 1890 to take a modest provincial teaching post, Lafcadio Hearn had wangled a commission from Harper's Weekly to file a series of articles on the Japanese scene. The arrangement pretty quickly fell apart with Hearn assailing Harper's editor, Henry Mills Alden, with a torrent of abusive letters, renouncing all contractual obligations. The excoriation of the high-minded and competent Alden is in marked contrast to the friendly and fraternal tone expressed in the Martinique letters, later reproduced in the 1921 issue.
