Mrs. MacSwiney, widow of the late Terence MacSwiney on a visit to the United States would appear to have attracted quite a crowd. There are plenty of uniforms in evidence, lots of people, lots of taxis but finding Mrs. MacSwiney will be like finding a needle in a haystack. Anybody spot the/a dog?
Terence James MacSwiney had only died on 25 October 1920, just over a month later (on 4 December) his widow and his sister (Mary MacSwiney) arrived at pier 60 on the North river, New York aboard the White Star liner Celtic. Urged to make the trip by Arthur Griffith to bring focus to the 'Irish Question'. Muriel MacSwiney (nee Murphy) had one child - Máire MacSwiney. Mary MacSwiney took on her brother's Dáil seat.

That coach seems to be the centre of attention so I imagine she was in it, and getting a guard of honour. Apparently when Terence McSwiney died there were no operas held in Italy that night as a mark of respect.

I don't think there is a single bare head in this photo. As a hat fan, I approve.

She didn't receive more than a brief one line mention in Canadian papers from what I could find. She returned to England after 6 weeks in America. Her husband died after a hunger strike in jail (he was the mayor of Cork ) a Pittsburgh paper: news.google.com/newspapers?id=pbgaAAAAIBAJ&sjid=9kkEA... She herself nearly died while touring the USA, in a car crash in Scranton, Pennsylvania, news.google.com/newspapers?id=RLZRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=iWgDA... The more I read about this, the sadder it gets. He was on a hunger strike for 79 days then died to protest his arrest on sedition charges...
