Relic of the 1798 Rebellion

| Summary: | On 9 June 1798 United Irishmen ambushed a detachment of Crown Forces at the entrance to Saintfield village. Fifty soldiers were killed and fifty wounded. Tha actual number of insurgent casualties is unknown. During the two days followng the skirmish local people buried the soldiers in a nearby marsh. Some of the Insurgent dead were interred at the bottom of the First Presbyterian churchyard. Two headstones indicate the spot today; one in memory of James McEwan of Ballymacreely, the other, as per photograph, is that of John Lowry. At some time the date on the headstone was corrected to read 9th June |
