Notes: | Robert Craggs, Earl Nugent and Viscount Clare (1702-1788), Vice-Treasurer of Ireland, was an Irish politician and a poet. He sought the friendship of Oliver Goldsmith. When Clare sent Goldsmith a gift of venison from Gosfield Park, the kindness of a jovial peer was immortalized in the posthumously published 'The Haunch of Venison', a poetical epistle to Lord Clare (1776). The day following the writing of this letter, Lord North became Prime Minister. Physical description: 3 pages. more |
