Inscribed by Lady Gregory on the front free endsheet to Augustus John, a frequent visitor to Coole: "A. E. John from A. Gregory." In spite of the date on the title-page, official publication did not occur until 16 May 1905. Yeats inscribed John Quinn's copy: "Red Hanrahan is an imaginary name - I saw it over a shop, or rather part of it over a shop in Galway village - but there were many poets like him in the eighteenth century in Ireland. I wrote these stories first in literary English but I could not get any sense of the village life with the words. Now, however, Lady Gregory has helped me, & I think the stories have the emotion of folklore. They are but half mine now, & often her beautiful idiom is the better half" Wade 59. Miller 4.
