Inscription, starting in pencil and continuing in ink (probably by Austin Damer Cooper (1831-1900)) on facing page: Slane abbey was founded in the 7th century by Canions of St. Austin - afterwards, burned and pillaged by the Danes ... Slane was the early residence and burial place of Slanius one of the Meath Kings ... A Cloictheach or round tower formerly existed here, and probably stood in the site of the present ecclesiastical ruins ...
