The estate became a property of Norman family Daton, who renamed the place Kildalton in the 13th century. After the rebellion of 1641, the estate was confiscated and granted to Sir John Ponsonby, who changed its name to Bessborough in honour of his wife. In 1940 the mansion was sold to the Oblate Fathers and in 1971 re-sold to the Department of Agriculture.
