Rosamond Jacob was born on 13 October 1888 in Waterford City. Her home background shaped her cultural and political activism as she was agnostic, republican, feminist and had socialist tendencies. She was a member of numerous political and cultural societies such as the Gaelic League, the National League and Inghinidhe na hÉireann. In 1906 she was a founder member of Waterford’s Sinn Féin club and learned Irish. She later joined the Irish Women’s Franchise League in 1908 and joined Cumann na mBan in 1914. In 1917 she represented Waterford as a delegate at the Sinn Féin convention where she won a commitment to women’s suffrage. During the Civil War (1922-1923) she sided with the republicans but joined a group of women assembled by Maud Gonne in 1922 to demand a ceasefire from the provisional government and anti-treaty forces. Six months later Jacob was briefly imprisoned in Mountjoy. Jacob acted as secretary of the Irish Women’s International League and was a delegate to congress in Vienna in 1921 and Prague in 1929. In 1926 she resigned from Sinn Féin and joined Fianna Fáil but gradually grew disillusioned with the emerging state which she found oppressive and overtly Catholic. As a result of this she became involved in various global movements including the International Disarmament Declaration Committee. Jacob was also a writer and published her first novel ‘Callaghan’ in 1920 under the pseudonym F. Winthrop. She later published a history book ‘The Rise of the United Irishmen, 1791-1794’ in 1937. Jacob remained politically active until her death in the Meath hospital in Dublin on 11 October 1960.
