Title was listed as a new publication in both the November 6, 1874 issue of the Bookseller (page 1071) and advertisements in another book with an 1876 copyright date issued by the same publisher.

In publisher's green cloth pictorial binding; title stamped in gilt and black with imprint in black on front cover; central illustration on front cover stamped in black within a double ruled frame depicts a bard seated on a throne, holding a harp, flanked on both sides by a single child sitting on a chair; above these figures is a register with two illustrations (displayed as if panels on a tapestry) of an individual scene from "King Alfred and Othere" and "Sleeping Beauty" respectively on each side of the seated figure; back cover is stamped in blind with a double ruled border; cream endpapers.

"Engraved and printed by Marcus Ward & Co., Royal Ulster Works, Belfast."

The 24 plates of illustrations by an unidentified artist are chromographs or color lithographs with some hand tinting; each plate bears the engraver's inscription: "Marcus Ward & Co."
