Notes: | Includes index. Martials Epigrams probably appealed to Patrick O'Neill more than any other work. Both Greeks and Celts were given to epigrammatic language, and Irish literature is replete with short epigrammatic verses of dán fhocail. Perhaps Patrick's greatest literary success in later life was as a translator of Irish epigrams into English verse. Martial always claimed to be a Celt, and was born in Celtic Iberia. It was Patrick O'Neill's custom to write down private notes to himself, as a thought might strike him on whatever lay handy, the margin of a book, the back of a manuscript, a rent receipt or a bill. Short extracts from Martial appear in these notes from time to time. Physical description: A4, xv, 584, [112] pages : illustrations ; 21 cm more |
