Notes:Croghan/O’Fallon/Clark family connections/O’Fallon, Benedict, 20 Sept. 1793-17 Dec. 1842. Republication of thirty-six narratives by twenty-eight explorers, scientists, and travelers who visited the Northern Plains between 1804 and 1876. Of especial interest to this collection is the report of Pilcher on the Indian tribes of the Upper Missouri, which has Benedict O’Fallon interest. The expedition of 1825 was under the command of General Henry Atkinson, who was accompanied by Benedict o’Fallon, the Indian Agent. Treaties were made in which the Indians acknowledged the supremacy of the United States and were promised its friendship and protection. There were also provisions relating to trade and the punishment of both Indians and whites for offenses committed against each other. Half a century later, Irishmen were players in the ongoing Indian-White Man struggles. Lieutenant Edward Maguire, a West point graduate, was Chief Engineer in the Department of Dakota under General Terry. Custer’s detachment was wiped out on June 25th and Major Reno’s command was in a state of siege until the afternoon of the 26th. Maguire reached the Little Big Horn battlefield on June 27th. Maguire’s report, reproduced here in full, appeared in the Report of the Secretary of War for 1876.
