Summary:Stipple engraved trade card for William Allen's Map and Print Warehouse, [later known in the 19th century as the firm of Allen and Sons], located on 32 Dame Street, Dublin, featuring two putti (cherubs) depicted on either side of a cartouche - one (at left) blows a horn while the cherub depicted on the right holds a winged caduceus (a staff entwined by two serpents, carried by Hermes in Greek mythology and often depicted in the left hand of Mercury, the messenger of the gods in Roman mythology). The 'Dublin Chronicle' of 29 March 1791 features an advertisement for Allen's firm that states that it is "...well known amongst the curious that it has been Allen’s great object these many years past to encourage the rising geniuses of Ireland to rival the works of other kingdoms which under the auspices of a generous public, he has in a great measure accomplished, and hope for this continued support of the truly patriotic...".
