Thomastown Castle, near Golden, Co. Tipperary was a multiple-bay two-storey country house, incorporating a seventeenth-century house; it was enlarged in the Gothic style by Richard Morrison for Francis Mathew, 2nd Earl of Llandaff in 1812. This was the birthplace and early home of Father Theobald Mathew, (1790-1856) [known as 'The Apostle of Temperance'], whose father was a cousin of the 1st Earl of Llandaff and for whom he worked as an agent. The building began falling into disrepair in the 1870s and is now a ruin.
