At that moment the mucous membrane slid, / under which bones and feathers were folded. / A muscle stirred and twitched on my shoulder knot, / a shape was growing behind me. The sun was hot. / With drying came distinctness, feeling extended / through to the tips of sailing wings that spread, / now huge and serviceable, overhead. / I was to pull them down, and they would try / to lift me off these stones into the sky.
