Summary:Satirical caricature, BM Satires 6815 by Thomas Rowlandson of William Eden who in his right hand, holds a pen while in his left hands he holds out a paper inscribed 'Liberty'. From his coat-pocket three documents protrude: 'Commissn to America'; '£6,000 pr Annum', and 'Commercl Negotiator to France'. Benedict Arnold is depicted wearing regimentals, a hat and holding a sword in his right hand, is saying 'Liberty'. Lettered with title above image, text within image, two verses below image and publication line: "London printed, & publish'd, 21 Dec. 1785 by W. Hinton No. 5 Sweetings Alley Royal Exchange". Verse lettered underneath reads: ''Two Patriots (in the self same Age was Born,) / And both alike have gain'd the Public scorn, / This to America did much pretend, / The other was to Ireland a Friend, / Yet Sword, or Oratory, would not do, / As each had different Plans in View, / America lost! Arnold, & Alass! / To loose our Eden now is come to pass'. As Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, William Eden, on account of his ability in commercial and financial questions, was asked by Pitt to negotiate the Commercial Treaty with France; he was one of the Commissioners to America in 1778 and was one of the ablest opponents of the Irish Propositions.
