| Notes: | The letterbook contains copies of official letters sent from the Office of the Lord Lieutenant in Dublin Castle. At the front and back are inserted pages containing an index to the letters. There are some annotations of later date. In the aftermath of the revolt the previous year the British administration pushed ahead with plans for an act of union between Britain and Ireland. But on 23 January 1799 a motion for union was narrowly defeated in the Irish House of Commons. Cornwallis and his chief secretary Lord Castlereagh worked hard over the next few months to secure the necessary votes to pass the act. Physical description: 1 volume (ca. 380 pages). more |
