| Summary: | Original artwork for illustration published on p.241 of 'The Lepracaun', November 1911. Signed "Spex" [pseudonym of artist John Fergus O'Hea] in lower left corner. Depicts John Redmond leading a horse and cart up a hill towards a Parliament House; the cart has the words "Irish Parliamentary Party" written across it. In the foreground William O'Brien is wearing a suit of armour inscribed "All for envy"; his horse [on the ground, having buckled under him] has the words "All for Ireland" inscribed on its saddle; Timothy Healy [wearing barrister's gown and wig] is trying to rouse the exhausted horse to get up. Published caption read: Mr. Wm. O'Brien: "Here John; pray accept the assistance of my famous thoroughbred charger to help you to the summit." Mr. J. Redmond: "Thanks, all the same, William, I'm getting along nicely with my own horse; besides your broken-winded, broken-kneed old crock would only put me down again. He's only fit for a carrion crow's dinner". Below the caption a printed statement reads: "The All-for-Irelanders were still quite willing to promise that if Mr. Redmond would take to heart the lessons the Eighty Club deputation taught him, and go in for a Home Rule settlement by consent, they would only be too delighted to drop any controversy, and to join in making the success of a Liberal Home Rule Bill as triumphant as possible" - Mr. William O'Brien's speech at Kinsale, Oct. 15th. Manuscript note in pencil on verso: "This drawing met with a slight accident, I happened to use some bread (on which was concealed a quantity of butter) to clean!!! the sketch and the consequence was a smudge here and there - I hope the etcher will not find any trouble with it". |
