Nolan refers to his depature from Colchester for South Africa in October 1899, casualties at the Battle of Colenso (27 Dec. 1899), the ground the battalion cover in marches, the difficulties the Boers have in replacing their death and injured (4 Jan. 1900), rumours of the Boers making a stand at Lydenburg (9 Aug. 1900), his being wounded from shell fire [1900], dystenary and fever among British soldiers, sending money home and his being transferred to India (Sept. 1902). Some letters are incomplete and have been annotated in a second hand.
