| Summary: | Satirical anti-Irish caricature [after Robert Dighton, see British Museum No. 1950,0808.4], cropped within plate mark featuring a witch-like woman in profile, [Hibernia] positioned as the map of Ireland, floating in mid-air, playing a harp. An infant is depicted on her shoulders, supported by her cloak - which is a red-coat [similar to that worn at the time by a British soldier]. Beneath her is a coastal landscape with a background of low mountains. Lettered with title followed by further text: "This portrait of Lady Hibernia Bull is humbly dedicated to her husband the great Mr. John Bull." and text within image, above image with publication line: 'Dighton del.' and 'London: printed for Bowles & Carver, No. 69, St. Paul's Church Yard.' Under the title: 'This Portrait of Lady Hibernia Bull is humbly dedicated to her Husband the great Mr John Bull'. [This 18th century etching famously influenced William Mecham's [pen name Tom Merry] colour chromolithographic map of Ireland, which depicted William Gladstone being strangled by Erin; this is held at NLI call number PD St Stephen's Review 1888 June 23 (A)]. |
