As many would know, when Kentucky declared for the Union, many others joined the Confederate First Kentucky Brigade, the "Orphan Brigade", commanded by John C. Breckinridge. The unit had a distinguished war time record. The book is felicitously written with many rather humorous anecdotes. Of Irish interest are the sorrows of one John Mahon, who was wounded on page 82 to come back and be wounded again on page 102. Trying his luck once more resulted in being again hit on page 119. Having won the Kentucky Trifecta, Mahon lets it ride and wins the Super Trifecta taking another bullet on page 185. Mahon cashed in his chips and made it safely out of the book. Theodore O'Hara, the author of A Bivouac for the Dead, and an aide to Breckinridge, had detected that the commanding general, Braxton Bragg, was once again looking for a scapegoat to cover up his poor generalship and wanted to hang it on Breckinridge. O'Hara warned his old friend about the shameful plan. Forewarned, forearmed.
