Alexander's great work, Military Memoirs of a Confederate, quickly became a classic when it was published in 1907. Douglas Southall Freeman considered it "altogether the best critique of the operations of the Army of Northern Virginia." In spite of the overwhelming positive response, many wished that Alexander had been more forthcoming about some information. This volume, completed several years before the publication of the Memoirs, was in manuscript until Gary Gallagher reconstructed the recollections in their original form.
