Summary: | Blank Christmas card of the Auxiliary DIvision of the Royal Irish Constabulary [ADRIC] with emblem of the Royal Irish Constabulary on front of card. Inside card on left is printed an image in silhouette of a member of the Auxiliary Division of the R.I.C. [with the distinctive Tam O'Shanter cap], drawing their pistol. Opposite is printed in blank font: "With the Best Wishes of the Auxiliary Division R.I.C. for A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year[.] Ireland Christmas 1920". Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Hugh Tudor created the ADRIC; recruiting began in July 1920 - its' role was to conduct counter-insurgency operations against the IRA. Many former British Army officers joined its' ranks. The ADRIC were noted for their reprisals on civilians and civilian property in revenge for IRA actions, most notably the burning of Cork city, 11 December 1920. |
