On the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pickett's Division was turned on the position held by the 69th Pennsylvania "Irish Volunteers" along a wall near the crest of Cemetery Ridge. The units to their left and right withdrew while the 282 men of the 69th stood their ground.
