Summary: | Letters to the County Governor Col. Wolfe of Forenaughts, Co. Kildare, from local landowners concerning reports and rumours of political activity and social unrest among the population of Kildare. Included are letters from Thomas Rawson of Athy, concerning robberies (Feb. 1809) and reports of the peasantry securing arms (1811), Robert Rawson of Athy, concerning reports of 'nightly meetings' and Shanavest activity (Jan. 1811), Samuel Neale of Newington, reporting United Irish meetings in Monasterevin, political meetings in Rathangan, and robberies along the Grand Canal at Rathangan, from Samuel Mills concerning disturbances at Henry Bridge on the Grand Canal (11 Feb. 1812) and William Evans, concerning robberies along the canal near Rathgan (May 1812). Also included is an extract from a letter relating to an attack on a hearth money collector; the authorship of the letter is unclear (17 Jan. 1811). |
