Summary: | A [signed] Bank of Ireland cheque [payment on behalf of L. & E. Egan] and a blank billhead [for L. & E. Egan, 35 & 36 Arran Quay, Dublin] found when the mail bags of the R.M.S. Leinster were washed ashore in November 1918. The R.M.S. Leinster was the Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire] to Holyhead mailboat until torpedoed by a German submarine UB-123 on 10 October 1918 when bound for Holyhead. The ship sank four miles east of the Kish Bank Lighthouse. The official death toll was 501 people [but as of October 2018 it is 564]. |
