The author describes himself as 'Casement's special Secret Service Agent. Sergeant - Casement's Irish Brigade. Sergeant - German Army. Sergeant - German Police, from 1914 to 1922'.

During the First World War Roger Casement travelled to Germany and tried to induce captured Irish prisoners of war to change sides, and to join an 'Irish Brigade', which would fight with the Germans against the British in return for German help in liberating Ireland. He managed to recruit only fifty-six men. When it became clear to Casement that the help offered by Germany was inadequate, he travelled to Ireland by German submarine at Easter 1916 to try to stop the rebellion, as he felt it could not succeed.
