Summary: | Writing in St. Malo, France, in June 1679, Burke recounts the details of his arrest on 30th October 1678, his imprisonment in Tuam and arraignment before a court in Headford. He says that nothing regarding a plot was found amongst his papers; he was allowed out on bail after seven days; and the following April, after several appearances before the Lord Lieutenant and Council in Dublin, he was banished under the terms of one of the recent Proclamations and given ten days notice to leave the kingdom. His appeal on grounds of age and infirmity was ignored, so he left Ireland on the 19th May 1679 and landed in St. Malo ten days later. (Burke was possibly a cleric). |

Notes: | This letter is written on a small piece of paper (ca. 10 x 9 cms.), which is closely cropped with some loss of text. In 1678 Titus Oates concocted the story of the Popish Plot to kill the king of England, Charles II, and before the tide turned against Oates and he was charged with perjury, thirty-five people had been executed in the official response to the supposed plot. Many Proclamations were issued in these years expelling Catholic clergy, forbidding the carrying of arms by Catholics, restricting their movements etc. Physical description: 1 item. more |
