The De La Salle College hurling team pose for Mr. Poole in their gear with hurls held high! A fine body of men and very well turned out. It is interesting to see the old sticks along with the jerseys and shorts/trousers that were worn at that time. What was the occasion I wonder? Had DLS won the county championship that year?

I'd love to know why the medals are being worn on the jerseys. Maybe just for the photograph. I'm surprised that the group is not perfectly centred in the frame.

I have only ever hurled after drinking too much Guinness, when I was younger, of course.

De La Salle seem to have four Senior County Hurling titles 1906, 2008, 2010, 2012, so the medals are not county senior hurling, and not All Irelands for sure... Come on the Deise.

They definitely looked way more like hockey sticks back then. Lots of ground hurling. It's a great image.

The nearest (timewise) account of a game I could find was in the Drogheda Independent of 26 September 1903, including the 17 names of the players. I wonder if the player in the centre of the front row is captain T. Gleeson. A T. Gleeson also features in match reports of the college football team in 1904 and 1904. DroghedaIndependent19030926

Incidentally, I also read an account of a meeting of the New Ross District GAA in June 1904. They were due to take part in the Canon Doyle Tournament at Waterford, and one attendee questioned whether their chosen mode of transport would get them and their supporters (including a piper and 'a number of step dancers') to the venue on time. He was assured that the steamship Ida would arrive at Waterford with time to spare.
