Bibliographic Details
Summary:Propaganda poster [in Dutch] published in London for distribution in the Netherlands to rally support for the Allied Powers [the Netherlands remained neutral in WWI]. It tracks the outbreak and development of WWI with references to the sinking of the RMS Lusitania [7 May 1915, off the Old Head of Kinsale, Co. Cork] ending with the formal U.S. declaration of war with Germany [6 April 1917]. The flags of the Allied Powers are illustrated in the centre of the poster. The first lines read:' Oostenrijk zendt Servië, zonder zijnen bond- /genoot, Italië, te raadplegen, een buitensporig / ultimatum en verklaart her den oorlog. / Duitschland steunt Oostenrijk in zijine strijdlus- / tige politiek en zendt Rusland een ultimatum...' [Which roughly translates as: 'Austria sends Serbia without his ally, Italy, to consult an excessive ultimatum and declares war. Germany and Austria support combative politics and send an ultimatum to Russia...'].
