A portrait of a young man wearing military uniform from the Clonbrock Collection with the catalogue title "Swiss 94 B.Oberlan. An oval portrait of a soldier with glasses. Dated 1894 it would have been before the Boer and World wars therefore this was likely to have been a professional soldier rather than an emergency/patriotic enlistment. Who was he and where did he fit in with the distinguished Dillon family?

Date: ca. 1894

It looks like a Royal Dublin Fusiliers badge on his collar. This regiment was from 1881 to 1922 and was based in Naas. However, if he was a Dillon, why didn't he join the Connaught Rangers?

The Fusilliers were the local regiment for Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow and Carlow. Can anybody pick our man out from this listing? www.nam.ac.uk/soldiers-records/persons?ss=%7B%22q%22:%22D...

The Swiss 94 B Oberlan pictures are from an album in which the Dillons went to Switzerland in 1894. But it includes other shots, like a glider and a snowfight in Trinity College.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikeegee] Could it be the Royal Munster Fusiliers badge? They look kind of similar at this low resolution.

Based on what I can see of the cap badge it looks like he is likely a member of the Royal Engineers and the collar badge would have had the word Ubique on the scroll beneath. The uniform he is wearing with the open neck and lapels was adopted after 1908.

www.flickr.com/photos/184711311@N04/ with that combination of cap badge and collar badge I'm pretty certain its the Royal Engineers. This is a nice example of a R.E. cap badge for comparison Family - Reg Owen Smith - Royal Engineers Cap Badge

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/33577523@N08] There were a lot of Dillons in the Royal Engineers, assuming it is even a Dillon, see discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_dss=range&am...
