Notes:Thomas Whelan was hanged on 14 March 1921 with Patrick Moran for his alleged part in the Bloody Sunday morning operations on 21 November 1920 when the IRA executed 14 British Intelligence officers [all of whom were members of the infamous Cairo Gang]. In retaliation, the Black and Tans opened fire later that day on spectators at a GAA match in Croke Park, killing 12 and wounding over 100. Thomas Whelan was charged along with James McNamara and Michael J Tobin for the killing of Captain T. Bagally at an address on Baggot Street. PAtrick Moran was also executed on 14 March 1921 even though [like Whelan] he had an alibi that he was attending mass in Blackrock at the time, [attested to by a Sergeant Connolly of the Dublin Metropolitian Police], Moran was sentenced to be hanged for his alleged part in the assassination of a British officer. On the day of Moran and Whelan's executions, the No. 1 branch of the ITGWU called a half-day general strike and a crowd of over 40,000 people gathered outside Mountjoy to pray for the men hoping for a last minute reprieve.
