Summary: | Colour postcard, influenced by the biblical story of Naomi and Ruth and in design by a painting (first exhibited in 1886) by Philip Hermogenes Calderon, (1833-1898) entitled 'Ruth and Naomi' [now in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, collection number WAG 114], depicting an illustration of person [representing England] embracing a woman [representing Ulster] while a woman representing Ireland in depicted standing in the background, observing the scene - she holds a copy of the Act of Union. Printed on the postcard is a quotation from Ruth 1.16, "Intreat me not to leave thee...". On verso the biblical quotation is printed in full -"Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou doest, I will go ; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people and thy God my God" - Ruth 1.16. |
