Summary: | Leaflet requesting financial support to erect a statue of Father Mathew, [Theobald Mathew (1790–1856), Capuchin Friar and teetotalist reformer], accompanied by a sketch model of the design proposed by Miss Mary Redmond, who had won a contest to create the sculpture. Those serving on the committee to whom one could contribute money are listed - Honorary Treasurers: John E. Redmond, M.P., Sir Robert Jackson and Sir Richard Martin with Honorary Secretaries: Sir Charles A. Cameron, Archibald J. Nicolls, George Noble Count Plunkett and Henry Wigham. In 1889, John Redmond expressed a wish to see a monument erected to Father Mathew in Dublin; Mary Redmond's statue of Father Mathew was erected on O'Connell Street in 1893. |
