Can Ireland pay her way? :
is she big and rich enough to set up as an independent nation?
Summary: | Judged by any standards, Ireland is fitted for independent sovereignty. She is large enough, populous enough, rich enough. For the money we paid in taxes last year we could run the entire Government business of three free European countries - Switzerland, Portugal, and Denmark - paying for all their police, soldiers, ships, and guns; while the tribute we paid to England, over and above revenue spent in Ireland, was alone greater than the entire joint revenues of Switzerland and Chile, each having a population nearly equal to Ireland's. |
