| Summary: | Myles Walter Keogh replies to a letter, sent by his brother Tom that arrived for him in New York and was forwarded on to him in Tennessee. Tom Keogh has clearly discussed in the previous letter that the rest of the Keogh family based in Ireland may also emigrate to join Myles in the United States. Tom and his sisters appear to be struggling somewhat [financially? it is unclear from the letter]. Myles writes to his brother Tom dissuading him, saying that he hopes their sisters "...will never have to leave the place where they are so well known and respected[.] [F]or you to strike out would be hard but it would be endurable for you but for them I hate to think of their coming to a strange land & among strangers". Myles also refers to a new Army Bill that has "just passed", saying that he is "awaiting news of importance to myself[,] for if I get a good position I will be able to be of material help to you in more ways that one. I am still on duty here & will not have to join my Rgt.[Regiment] until the end of October I think but I expect to be in N.[ew] York by September". |
