Summary:The Post Box located in Patrick Street, Portarlington, is the oldest still in use in the country. Made from cast iron, restoration work on the old pillar box was carefully carried out some years ago. It was sand blasted and repainted in standard green. It was manufactured in England and the design dates from 1859/1866 and it is inscribed Cochrane Grove and Co. Woodside Works, Dudley 1866. The Portarlington pillar box is one of only ten known examples in Britain or Ireland.
