Given that this is the anniversary of the death of Julius Caesar, posting an IMPERIAL plate image seems appropriate? Church Street in Ennis in County Clare on a fine day, with a mix of people and things to see, make it quite a charming image to end the week.
Photographer: Robert French
Date: Circa 1865 - 1914

Mr French / Lawrence has been generous ... catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000328079 This IMP catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000323246 ROY catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000333957 CAB What was the order of clicking? No clock on the church tower! Edit - We are looking almost north, and going by the shadows on the left of the street, I think the Royal plate was first, the Cabinet second, and this Imperial plate was last.

The big key is still on the wall. Did the street change name or is it wrongly labelled? 16 Abbey St., Ennis. maps.app.goo.gl/zfdn84FVz51sEUjQ9

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikeegee] Marked Church Street on the 25" map from around 1900. Lawrence calls it Abbey street in L_ROY_11350 below, which we thought was 1910 ish. Abbey Street, Ennis, County Clare

L_ROY_11347 is a similar angle also called Abbey Street, and shows two different shops on the left, : Griffin's draper where the new looking Apothecary is in todays and A Knox (with a Gilbey's Wines and Spirits sign) where J. Kidd is in this one. In the 1901 census, it is Church Street, and I see Alexander Knox next door to Matthew Kenny, but other side of Knox is John Gilbert's Pharmacy as in todays shot (above the dor I see...lbert ...rgeon) In 1911, it is Abbey Street, no Knoxes. I see Kenny but not Kidd or an Apothecary shop. There are some vacancies near Kenny, but next door should be Webster. I see Webster at right in 11347.

Gilbert has a Medical Hall on Abbey Street in 1911, but not beside Matthew Kenny. Aaah! Now I see Gilbert's Medical Hall in a 3rd location in 11350 upthread!

@30369211@N00/ Aaah is right! Completely befuddled here. Should we settle for Chabbey Street?

There is still an Alexander Knox pub in Abbey street today: Streetview. Mr. Knox is in Ennis in 1911, but married 9 years and living in a family home, not a pub. He is listed as a merchant at the same address at his death n 1935. I think 11347 must be later than todays, and Knox's pub is unmoved since 1901, so this is before 1901.Consistent with the 1889 suggested by the county council above. The Apothecary Hall frontage looks brand new here, is a bit scuffed looking in 11347, and is still there in Streetview, Pynes drapery in 2022.

Clare County Library has listings from Guys Munster Directory of 1893. Here I see Drapers: Dillon, P J & Co, Church street (at right today). Apothecaries. Seymour's Medical Hall, Church street O'Sullivan, J J, Jail street (so that's a no) Grocers; Kidd, James, Church street (I see a retired grocer in Limerick in the 1901 census) Roughan & Co, Church street (at right here) So, a better match for todays shot than 1901 or 1911 census, consistent with that 1889 date - but not exact, as no Apothecary hall on Church Street 1893. Some other visible names like Barrett and Kenny are here throughout.

SO... Kidd, not Knox means before 1901. PJ Dillon and James Kidd are in 1893, but not Gilbert. Gilbert is here in 1901, and in todays shot (looking new) but not in 1893. So I think 1889 is too early - we are between the 1893 Guys and 1901 census.

Paging forward in the ROYs we get L_ROY_04167 Jail St. below, which I thought nearer 1901 than 1911. One named tailor died in 1889,,, Jail St. Ennis

“What suggested scene was then reconstructed by Bloom? The Queen’s Hotel, Ennis, county Clare, where Rudolph Bloom (Rudolf Virag) died on the evening of the 27 June 1886, at some hour unstated, in consequence of an overdose of monkshood (aconite) selfadministered in the form of a neuralgic liniment composed of 2 parts of aconite liniment to 1 of chloroform liniment (purchased by him at 10.20 a.m. on the morning of 27 June 1886 at the medical hall of Francis Dennehy , 17 Church street, Ennis) after having, though not in consequence of having, purchased at 3.15 p.m. on the afternoon of 27 June 1886 a new boater straw hat, extra smart (after having, though not in consequence of having, purchased at the hour and in the place aforesaid, the toxin aforesaid), at the general drapery store of James Cullen, 4 Main street, Ennis” - Ulysses The street changed names in 1900, so there’s a clue to dating
