Very exciting this morning, Flickroonies - we're venturing onto English soil!
This is an early O'Dea photograph from 1936, allegedly taken in Swedford, England. On a very cursory search, Swedford certainly wasn't leaping off the Google page, but we knew that Mr O'Dea took photos around Guildford...
eyelightfilms was first out of the traps on this one, locating Henekeys at no. 58, and Carling, Gill & Carling at 59 & 60 High Street in Guildford, Surrey.

CARLING, GILL & CARLING were at 59 & 60 High St. Guildford.
In 1842 Thomas Gill took over Thomas Trimmer’s business (which was originally established in 1795). By 1895 the firm had become known as Carling, Gill & Carling. Like many ironmongers, the business sold a vast range of goods, such as household items and agricultural equipment. It was also contracting as gas and water engineers, tinsmiths and whitesmiths and even bell hangers. They had several premises in Guildford as well as a branch in Godalming later on.
The company went into liquidation in 1937.
Also, evidence here of a Henekeys at 58 High St. Guildford.

Carling, Gil & Carling were at 59 & 60 High Street, Guilford. They were wound up on 31 Mar 1937. In 1921 the Guildford & District Club moved out of 58 High Street and the premises were taken over by Henekeys.

@shanekillen Me too! I'd just got it on Google. At least I found it in Surrey history. Receipted bills of Carling, Gill and Carling, Ironmongers and Heating Engineers [of 59-60 High Street and 47 North Street] Guildford.

Yes, definitely Guildford High Street - just look at the hill and the cobbles! And let's pinpoint it even more... according to Exploring Surrey's Past and Guildford Institute, Henekeys Wine Rooms were at 58 High Street.
Incidentally, I know Surrey pretty well, and can confidently say there's no such place as Swedford.

Thanks a million, everyone! And @gnmcauley that sounds like the Flickr version of dance instructions: Arch, arch, rectangle, rectangle, big bay! :)
Will add to the map asap. I'm perusing the Irish Builder re date for Stevenson’s building for Steen & Milliken in the Irish Builder...

@peterdenton That's excellent, because a few of the photos say Swedford. But I can't change the catalogue info until we have an alternate location, so I'll put them up on here so we can find out exactly where they are rather than in mythical Swedford...

This Guildford author and tour guide (and castle custodian) confirms the above! Nice shot. There's been quite some changes since then.

Nobody seems interested in the two cars - what make and model are they? There's a flickr group "What car is this?" at www.flickr.com/groups/2532629@N20/ that might be able to help identify these mystery vehicles.

I did a Google search and came up with the suggestion that the second car, HX 3427, appears be a Morris, possibly a Morris 10/4, see: Link, however I'd seen similar cars labelled differently, see Link, which is labelled as a Morris 6... I'm not a car expert in any way, so I could be totally wrong!

I was in Guildford yesterday and passed this spot.
Henekeys is now an outlet of "Claire's Accessories", purveyors of tacky costume jewellery and other nicknacks.
