A keen sportman, he was honorary secretary of the Dublin Bay Sailing Club and Dun Laoghaire branch of the Lifeboat Institution. He was also an enthusiastic amateur photographer; in 1891 the Photographic Society of Ireland awarded him a medal for his lantern slides.
